Community Shield winners – Manchester United 0

rvpCSManchester United faced off against Wigan Athletic today in the FA Community Shield match.

It took Robin Van Persie only 6 minutes to get himself on the score sheet, and put Manchester United in the lead. Evra received the ball on the left, looked up, and floated a ball into the box, and Van Persie did the rest nodding the ball past the keeper making the score 1-0.

Wigan kept themselves composed and began to create some good play with the players linking up with each other and having a good spell of possession. Wigan created some chances whipping the goal in front of De Gea but nobody could get on the end of the ball to convert the chance. Another chance came with a set piece that De Gea was able to parry away and keep United on top.

Wigan came out in the second half with the same confidence that they could put themselves right back in the game, holding possession and seeming comfortable on the ball, until the 58th minute where Van Persie received the ball on top of the box, shuffled his feet and cracked a shot. The shot was deflected off James Perch’s left foot sending the keeper the wrong way and the ball went into the back of the net giving United room to breathe.

After Van Persie’s goal, Wigan seem to have lost the wind that was in their sail and Manchester United controlled the game until the whistle.

Wigan left the game headed back down to the Championship, while United head down to Swansea to start of their campaign in the league.
